Marithé + François Girbaud

Founded by French designers Marithé Bachellerie and François Girbaud in 1972, Marithé + François Girbaud became one of the most innovative denim brands of the late twentieth century. Renowned for pioneering new washing techniques, engineered fits, and unconventional garment construction, the label helped redefine the possibilities of denim and casualwear. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the brand gained international recognition for its futuristic designs, oversized silhouettes, and technical approach to fashion, influencing both streetwear and contemporary denim culture. The house became particularly known for introducing stonewashing and other experimental treatments that would shape the denim industry for decades. While the brand's global presence declined during the 2010s and many of its original operations ceased, its archival pieces remained highly sought after by collectors and vintage enthusiasts. In recent years, Marithé + François Girbaud has experienced a resurgence through a successful reintroduction in South Korea.
